Why does my T4 say I'm exempt from PPIP?
Q. Hi, I worked in two different provinces in 2008. Jan 1 - May in New Brunswick June-Dec 31 in Ontario. I resided in Ontario on Dec 31st, 2008 and still do to this day. I recently received my T4 from my former employer in New Brunswick and Box 28 on the T4 slip has a big X under PPIP exemption. I have no idea why I'm exempt, and from what I gather, it is very rare to be exempt from CPP, EI or PPIP. I worked for this employer for over 5 years and I was never exempt from PPIP before. Can anyone tell me why I would be exempt from PPIP, or if this is most likely just an error. For the record I am single with no dependents.

A. It shouldn't be checked. If you were living in Quebec and working in any other province, you would have to pay into the PPIP plan. The amounts would be calculated on Schedule P of the Quebec return. Since you're living in Ontario, this is really a moot point, however the employer has made a large mistake if any of the employees are now living in Quebec. I haven't come across a single legitimate instance of someone not paying into PPIP when they live in Quebec and have employment or self-employment income.
