On ground of assurance of the return, there are two kinds of Investments - Riskless and Risky. Riskless investments are guaranteed, but since the value of a guarantee is only as good as the guarantor, those backed by the full faith and confidence of a large stable government are the only ones considered "riskless." Even in that case the risk of devaluation of the currency (inflation) is a form of risk appropriately called "inflation risk." Therefore no venture can be said to be by definition "risk free" - merely very close to it where the guarantor is a stable government. From Wikipedia under the

I think the lowest risk investment in the world right now is volatile silver. It's at 600-year historic lows. It can't go bankrupt. It's in a rising stealth-bull market since 2004. The inflation-adjusted high from 1980 of $50/oz. is more like $400 today, yet silver is only $13/oz. The biggest risks in silver are buying paper silver promises, and not the real thing. Paper silver promises can default, and go bankrupt, and are not likely to be backed by any real silver. So get to a coin shop, and get the real thing like bars or coins, and not "rare" coins, get the stuff valued by the metal content alone. Q. I'm 31, all I have is a risk free cd at my local bank. I know I'm making pennies right now. I would probably invest between 5-10k, but need something that is low to no risk with a return better than my bank. What are my options? Asked by PoeticDevice - Wed Sep 16 15:07:31 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. McDonald's (MCD) would provide an excellent entry into equities. Trading at about $56/share MCD provides a yield of 3.7%. Altria Group (MO) in another dependable company with shares at $18.25 MO yields 7.6%. 100 shares MCD + 100 shares of MO = $7,425 These two investments would provide $345.90 in dividends.
