A. Check with Rotary. They are in your phone book. Ask them if they sponsor students for the foreign exchange program. You need to sign up a year in advance. The applications are due in September and you prepare for it for the entire year before you depart the next school year. I would check now to see if they do it in your area and that way, if they do not you can look for other options.

What brokers offer trading on foreign exchanges?
Q. I believe interactive brokers allows for this, but I don't have the money for it. I'm looking for a broker that gives access to the American exchanges as well as the major foreign exchanges, such as the London or other European exchanges. I do understand that I can purchase international mutual funds, but I want to invest in international stocks individually. Thanks! I'm looking for stocks, not currency exchanges. I should have made that clear, sorry. Thanks for answering.

What is the need for so many securities exchanges?
Q. Why is there an AMEX, an NYSE, a NASDAQ, then CME, CBOE, and then the regional exchanges, like Philadelphia Exchange...etc Are these different exchanges in competition with each other for different stocks to get listed? Do they offer any competitive benefits for listing with them? If a stock is only on the NASDAQ, like MSFT, can someone trading on the NYSE buy MSFT? How so? Also, what is the point of the regional exchanges? Why can't they all just trade online instead of a pit where everyone is hollering at each other. This seems highly inefficient. Thanks.

A. About the only similarity is that they both involve disposal of property. Maybe a couple of quick examples would explain them. Involuntary conversion: Your house burns to the ground. You take the insurance money and don't build another one. It's treated as if you sold your home. Whether or not any taxes would be due depend upon the timelines involved. Like kind exchange: You live in Missouri. You own a rental property. You're retiring to Florida and don't want to give up the rental but don't want to be a long-distance landlord either. You exchage your Missouri rental for one of the same value in Florida. You will defer taxation on the disposal of the Missouri property until you sell the one in Florida. Why are stock exchanges physical stock exchanges still existent?
Q. Physical stock changes offer little more than an major inconvenience to try to trade. There are just a huge bunch of people yelling. Couldn't they have made this a little more efficient? Electronic trading should be the de facto method of exchange of financial markets. Are there any good reasons why they exist? Might they actually confer a benefit that is not represented by electronic exchanges?

A. I'm not sure that they are beneficial but there are several reasons why the practice has not yet gone away. First, it's tradition. Obviously this was the only way to originally do it in the open as to make buy and sell opportunities available to groups of brokers. Second, some believe that you can get some insight into traders motives if you physically see them as they make trades. Third, stock exchanges are slow to adopt new technology. Fourth (and probably the most realistic), if you switched to electronic transfers than you would be putting thousands of traders out of work and it's pretty uncommon for someone to encourage a change at work that will make them unemployed. And lastly, there are some who will take advantage of the… [cont.]

Does anyone know how to convert the points to exchanges on Weight Watchers?
Q. I have the old plan from 1995 that only shows exchanges. The new system is points. How do the points relate to exchanges? I want to try the recipes on their site, but I can't calculate the old way and I would rather not rejoin when I have what I need and am doing fine with it. Any help is appreciated. I don't have time to sit in on a meeting. Does anyone know how many calories each exchange and point has? My friend is on the points system and I am on the exchange system and it seems to me that I am losing weight. She showed me her plan and I find that counting portions is much more in controll with the sodium, fat, etc.

A. Points don't related to exchanges in any way at all. The exchanges are more closely related to the diabetic exchanges in a diabetic diet. I never did the exchange program, only points. Points don't exactly relate calories because the formula to calculate points is based on the total calories, total fat gms and total fiber gms in a serving. So a point could be any where from 20 to 90 calories depending on the combination of the three in an individual food. Since you don't have time for the meetings why not join online - it's only about $20 a month and you can stop anytime. You could also buy the At Home kit from the website. I don't know the cost of that, I think it's around $100, you get the points finder, the 10 weeks of meeting… [cont.]

Are stocks that trade on different exchanges the same shares?
Q. For example, if I were to buy BHP, it trades on numerous exchanges including the NYSE. I'm an american, so I have to buy it on the NYSE, but I'm also worried about the devaluation of the dollar. If the dollar becomes worthless, will I still have the same amount of stock that the Australians, etc have? Is it a single pool of shares that you can buy in different currencies and if my currency completely vanishes, I will still own the stock the same amount as any other country? Thank you. Please only answer the question asked using the assumptions given above.

A. Hi karenchii, Publicy traded companies issue common shares to shareholders. The shareholders are able to buy and sell these shares on any stock exchange that lists the company's shares for trading, such as the NYSE. The shares being traded on different exchanges are the same but it is common for stock exchanges to list stocks for trading in the local currency. For stocks that are liquid enough, the amount you will get for buying and selling the shares will depend on the exchange rate between the currencies. For example, let's say you want to invest in a stock that trades in the U.S. and Australia. If the stock trades in the U.S. for $10 per share, and the U.S. dollar is worth 1.2 Australian dollars, then it should trade in Australia for… [cont.]

A. This website is great for web advertising. It's a free targeted advertising (based on you selecting various categories you would like to be included in) and link exchange network. You put other websites text ads on your page and yours appears on others. And it really is 100% free, forever. While it's not something that guarantees traffic it also doesn't cost anything, so why not try it? Good luck!

Why do people find Needle Exchanges Immoral?
Q. Needle Exchanges are places where IV drug users go to exchange dirty needles for clean ones in hopes that the HIV virus, the virus which causes AIDS, would not be spread.
Asked by GoudasGoddess - Sat Feb 4 03:21:00 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Some people feel that the needle exchange program is immoral because they don't look at the fact that it could help prevent the infection of hiv. They think it is a way of saying "Here's a needle, now go shoot up." They feel you are giving them permission to do drugs.

Everything to do with Universities is big business from the tuition to textbooks there is so much price gouging it is insane. I would love to find Universities on the stock exchange because they would definitely be a great investment because they own people due to 'necessity' of a college degree. It's no wonder they call my degree a BS because that's exactly what it is, BS.

What is the difference between US stock exchanges?
Q. For example, between the NASDAQ and Dow Jones. Are they each associated with particular industries? If they are not associated with particular industries, I don't understand the reason they do not always move in the same direction. Also, how do corporations decide which stock exchange to initiate their IPO through?

A. The two major exchanges in the US are the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), and Nasdaq. Nasdaq is completely an electronic exchange. All transactions are made by computer. The NYSE up till recently has been conducted on a trading floor, but it too is starting to trade electronically. There are different requirements for listing on each exchange. Generally the requirements are tougher on the NYSE. Smaller start-up companies the sort that Silicon Valley is famous for have an easier time meeting the requirements of Nasdaq. Generally the NYSE will have larger companies, whereas Nasdaq is generally balanced towards smaller companies. I say generally. Note that Microsoft is traded on Nasdaq. Q. For example, between the NASDAQ and Dow Jones. Are they each associated with particular industries? If they are not associated with particular industries, I don't understand the reason they do not always move in the same direction. does anyone know the exchanges for the weight watchers exchange plan for women and children?
Q. I would like to find the exchange units for the old weight watchers program. Points and the flexplan are not good for me, I keep falling off the proverbial wagon.
