In accounting and finance, equity is the residual claim or interest of the most junior class of investors in an asset, after all liabilities are paid. If valuations placed on assets do not exceed liabilities, negative equity exists. In an accounting context, Shareholders' equity (or stockholders' equity, shareholders' funds, shareholders' capital or similar terms) represents the remaining interest in assets of a company, spread among individual shareholders of common or preferred stock. At the start of a business, owners put some funding into the business to finance assets. Businesses can be considered to be, for accounting purposes, sums of liabilities and assets; this is the accounting equation. After liabilities have been accounted for, the positive remainder is deemed the owner's interest in the business. This definition is helpful put into receivership or bankruptcy. Then, a series of creditors, ranked in priority sequence, have the first claim on the proceeds (e.g. asset sales), and ownership equity is the last or residual claim against assets, paid only after all other creditors are paid. In such a case, creditors may not get enough money to pay their bills, and nothing is left over to reimburse owners' equity. Thus owners' equity is reduced to zero. Ownership equity is also known as risk capital, liable capital and equity. From Wikipedia under the

Interest for home equity loans are only tax deductible up to the original purchase price of your property unless they increase the value of the property. Example: 10 years ago you purchased your home for $100,000. The interest on any loans that total $100,000 will be deduct able on your federal taxes unless you use the loan proceeds to add to the property. Q. And why does Gold/Silver fluctuate because of their value? And has it always been this way? Thanks for your help. I want to invest in Gold and Silver and was going to but I dont see it going up? Asked by David K - Wed Oct 29 15:05:46 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Equity Investment : Investing in stocks. Gold and Silver go up in price due to 1. Basic demand and supply, that is, go up when demand rises and go down if supply rises. 2. Flight to safety increases their demand [and thus price] because people run to what they think is currently safe, for example, at the present time, they think that equities are unsafe even if they are on fire sale. Thus gold and silver usually rise in price when stocks go down.
